Defining and creating good, quality education is a major concern for residents, and a task force has been established to help better achieve successful investment and economic development strategies in the educational system. The citizens of Annapolis seek a more effective voice in establishing a quality educational system to serve their needs. To accomplish this goal, a program to investigate and design effective actions for improving the quality of education is needed.

Nevertheless, Annapolis is served by the Anne Arundel County Public School system. The AACPS school system is the 5th largest in Maryland, and among the 50 largest school systems in the country. And in 2005 had a student population of about 74,000 with 4,658 graduates. In the Anne Arundel system there are 77 elementary schools, 19 middle schools, 12 high schools, two centers of applied technology, three special education centers, one alternative high school, one middle school learning center and one center for the emotionally impaired.

Additionally, the city is host to St. John’s College and the U.S. Naval Academy.

The Naval Academy was founded in 1845 by the Secretary of the Navy, George Bancroft. The Naval Academy gives young men and women the up-to-date academic and professional training needed to be effective naval and marine officers in their assignments after graduation and in careers later in life.
