About the City
Annapolis is a city rich with history and textured with an enormous amount of culture. As the capitol of Maryland, and though part of the greater Baltimore/Washington, D.C. landscape, it is home to only about 40,000 people. It also serves as the Anne Arundel County seat.
This romantic city that has touched the days going back before the birth of this country sits on the Severn River, only two miles from Chesapeake Bay.
Founded in 1649, the city has celebrated 350 years of history and culture. Once the capitol of the United States, Annapolis was home for the likes of George Washington or Thomas Jefferson during their political careers.
Though much has changed in the city’s three-and-a-half centuries, it still boasts some of the finest architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries including the original residences of all four original signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Annapolis is home of the United States Naval Academy, which was founded in 1845 and the home of St. John's College, founded in 1696 as King William's School. It is the third oldest institution of higher learning in the United States.
Annapolis actually received its original charter from Queen Anne of England on November 22, 1708 and is the oldest incorporated city in Maryland, and one of the oldest in the entire United States.
